Experience The Planets: an update

sound

The new version of Greg Martin’s Experience The Planets project was launched this week. After working on and off over the last few months, I’ve been able to contribute 3 new tracks (plus the remastered original ‘Earth’) to  the project. Progress continues on the complete set of 8 for The Planets, which I am aiming for the end of the year. You can stream the 4 completed tracks here:

About the tracks

The challenge with these tracks has been extending the creative process that led to the creation of the original track for ‘Earth’ to adequately express the  beauty, mystery and hostility of our other planets. Like the Experience the Planets project itself, I am trying to interpret our modern understanding of these planets as real ‘places.’ I’ve tried to  take the music beyond the litanny of ambient music’s sci-fi tones to a more somber and cinematic interpretation of these environments, but still blending in an expression of  the mythological heritage so deeply rooted in our thinking about them.

Outside of the warm familiarity of Earth, I’ve thought about the ‘terrible beauty’ of Venus, embraced the strangeness of Uranus and the distant frigidity of Neptune. It’s been a fun challenge.

Since starting the project, I’ve upgraded to Logic Express for my primary editing software. I’ve also added some new tools with Native Instruments Kore2, and recently a set of KRK v4 monitors. All in all I couldn’t be happier with the production setup. Look for more updates soon.

  2. I just wanted to drop by and let you know that I love the new tracks. When I heard them on the ETP website, I left it open all afternoon and just let them play over and over while I worked. They’re extremely soothing and they help keep me in a good mood while dealing with unhappy customers! Anyway, thank you for producing and sharing such wonderful music with all of us. I can’t wait to hear the next 4!

  9. Thanks for all the great feedback! It’s really encouraging to hear.

Regarding inspiration, it comes from many sources: much from cinema, some from found soundscapes. But mostly it’s from immersion of playback, using headphones, combining sound sources, delays, feedback and reverb to create a blanket of sound. From there I see where it goes to establish a feeling of representation and place.

    More soon!

  10. I love this music! You really captured the essence of the planets, especially Venus. Is there a place where I could buy the music? Maybe iTunes?

  11. Hello

I just dropped by to point out how god damn amazing the project is. On the on hand I absolutely adore Greg Martin’s art, especially the planetary project and on the other hand I love the music to it. You’ve truly created a masterpiece that perfectly accompanies the single planets.
It’s atmospheric, overwhelming, distant, cold. Your music is important to me. It’s infinite. I would certainly choose your tracks if I ever intended to commence a journey through our solar system.
I cannot wait for the rest of the tracks and I really hope you make them available for purchase because I would certainly want to have them in their entirety.

    Best regards.

  12. Oh and by the way. If you need more inspiration then I would like to show you the artists Carbon Based Lifeforms. They are adorable. They create perfect space music in my view. I hope you like it.

Here are some tracks that are streamable:

  13. Thanks everyone for your support and encouragement on this project! It’s a long process, certainly taking longer than I expected, but I am still planning on releasing the complete album in iTunes around the end of the year.

    Thanks again!

  15. I am very interested in your music as well but . . . . I don’t use iTunes for anything and do not wish to ever. Will you offer this music in any other form than on iTunes? I hope so, I am even willing to send payment for a home-burned CD.

  16. Incredible music. Truly. It was such an amazing surprise to open up the Experience The Planets project and hear ‘Venus’ suddenly start blasting because I had accidentally left my speakers up on really high volume from last night.

Seriously, I can’t wait for Saturn and Mars, seeing as those are my favorite planets apart from Earth. of course.

  20. Hello,
Your music is superb and charming. I want to hear it again and again, it brings me a lot of enjoyment. It just creates a enchanting atmosphere which helps me to hear my own thoughts. And the Experience The Planets project is the most beautiful thing that I’ve seen for recent years. Thank You! Unfortunately, I can’t find your album in our shops and can’t download it, because I live in Kazakhstan. But I hope I’ll manage to find it, because i really want to have tracks with me everywhere. I think You will be a little surprised to know that your music is adored a long way from USA, on another continent. Thanks a lot!
